“Track Delay Disappoints Fans at Ontario Honda Dealers Indy”

Date:

The first-ever Ontario Honda Dealers Indy event in Markham faced a setback at the start. Practice and qualifying for the only IndyCar race in Canada were called off on Friday due to incomplete track construction, leading to safety checks being delayed. Organizers aimed to reschedule all missed sessions from the first day to Saturday’s agenda.

This year marked Markham’s debut as the host city for the event, previously held at Toronto’s Exhibition Place since its inception in 1986. J. Douglas Boles, the president of IndyCar, expressed disappointment over the track delays, emphasizing the significance of the Ontario market for the sport and acknowledging the loyal fan support.

Long-time race attendees Mark Coburn and Scott Stobo from Kitchener and Waterloo, respectively, shared mixed feelings about the postponement. Despite understanding the safety priority, they highlighted the impact on fan engagement and excitement without on-track activities throughout the day.

The event relocation from downtown Toronto to Markham, announced by IndyCar and the City of Markham in September, introduced a new circuit layout encompassing key roads and tracks. Notable features such as a pedestrian bridge and safety fencing adjustments were left incomplete as the race day approached.

Financial backing from the Ontario and federal governments, alongside significant capital spending by Markham, underscored the substantial investments in the event. Spectators enjoyed free admission on Fridays, with donations to the Make-A-Wish Foundation encouraged. However, challenges like limited shade and seating options were noted by fans accustomed to the previous venue.

Off-track engagements, including driver autograph sessions, proceeded as planned, while Saturday’s schedule promised a packed day of practice sessions, qualifying rounds, and various racing series competitions. Organizers expressed confidence in the track’s potential and thanked the city of Markham for its support in providing a promising racing circuit.

In addition to the IndyCar races, other series like USF2000 Championship, USF Pro 2000, Radical Cup Canada, and NASCAR Canada Series were set to entertain spectators over the race weekend. Despite the day’s setbacks, attendees anticipated an exciting weekend of motorsport action in Markham.
