In a 2008 police interview recording, Duane (Keffe D) Davis informed detectives that his nephew Orlando (Baby Lane) Anderson was the one who shot and killed rapper Tupac Shakur back in 1996 in Las Vegas. Davis, who claimed to have been in the car with Anderson during the incident, is currently facing charges related to orchestrating Shakur’s murder. Anderson had already passed away a decade prior to the interview.
According to Davis, while riding in a white Cadillac with Anderson and two others, they pulled up next to a car carrying Shakur and Marion (Suge) Knight. Davis mentioned that he would have shot if they were on his side, but since Knight’s car was on the other side, he passed the gun to Deandre “Big Dre” Smith, who refused it. Anderson, seated in the back, then took the gun and started firing.
During the trial, jurors listened to the audio recording of Davis describing the events, with some taking notes while Shakur’s family observed quietly. This was the first time Davis openly discussed his role in the shooting. The interview is a crucial piece of evidence in the case against the 63-year-old Davis, as prosecutors emphasized his admissions to the police, podcasts, and his 2019 memoir, “Compton Street Legend.”
Davis, who pleaded not guilty, had previously suggested to the FBI that his nephew was not involved in Shakur’s shooting, implicating Knight or Sean (Diddy) Combs instead. Despite the prosecution’s claims, Davis’s lawyer dismissed the narrative as fiction, arguing that Davis was not credible and that investigators failed to support his statements with evidence.
Although initially a suspect in the 1997 shooting death of Shakur’s rival, the Notorious B.I.G., Davis was later cleared. The detectives conducting the interview assured Davis of confidentiality, but prosecutors argued that his subsequent public statements in interviews and the memoir breached that agreement.
Prosecutors allege that Shakur’s killing was in retaliation for an earlier altercation involving Anderson and Shakur’s entourage at the MGM Grand after a Mike Tyson fight, during which Davis was present. Davis recounted in “Compton Street Legend” that after the shooting, he believed Knight had been fatally hit.
Tupac Shakur, who passed away in 1996, continues to be revered as a cultural icon and one of the most influential rappers of all time. His legacy has endured and grown over the years, solidifying his status in the music and entertainment industry.
