Canada’s foreign affairs minister announced that five high-ranking Iranian officials will be subjected to sanctions due to their involvement in activities in the Strait of Hormuz that disrupt international peace. The minister emphasized the significance of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz for global trade and energy security. The sanctioned individuals, including members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), have been identified for their actions that pose threats to international waterway security.
The targeted Iranian officials are Ali Abdollahi, Lt.-Col. Ebrahim Zolfaghari, Ebrahim Azizi, Shahram Irani, and Hamid Hosseini. With these latest sanctions, Canada has now imposed sanctions on a total of 232 individuals and 260 entities associated with Iran’s security, intelligence, and economic sectors.
The sanctions come amidst increasing pressure to resolve the conflict involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran. Efforts to finalize a peace agreement, initially agreed upon in June, have not materialized. The conflict, which began in February following a joint U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran, has seen fluctuating statements from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding escalation threats and peace deal prospects. Iran has attempted to leverage control over the strait, a critical route for global oil and liquefied natural gas transportation.
Canada and other countries have called on Iran to cease obstructing commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump has urged allies to assist in securing the vital oil shipping route, with frustrations growing over strained relationships with some allies. Despite claims of military victories, disruptions to shipping persist, prompting discussions about maintaining a naval presence to enforce the blockade on Iran.
As the conflict continues, there is mounting pressure on Trump to end the war, particularly as high fuel prices impact his approval ratings ahead of the upcoming U.S. midterm elections. The global economy is also feeling the effects, with a forecast indicating a significant decrease in global oil supply for the year.
