Nick Reiner, accused of murdering his parents, Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner, last year, has been denied access to the $1.5 million US trust fund he sought for his legal defense. In a June filing, Reiner was trying to claim allegedly unpaid money from a trust fund his parents set up for him in 1993.
Trustees, referring to the “slayer statute” in California law, rejected Reiner’s request for funds, which prohibits individuals from inheriting money, property, or trusts from someone they have intentionally killed. Rob Reiner, a renowned director and actor, and Michele, a photographer and producer, were fatally stabbed in their California home on December 14, 2025, with their son Nick arrested shortly after. The 32-year-old has pleaded not guilty to murder charges.
The indictment, unsealed by a Los Angeles County grand jury, states that Reiner was lying in wait before attacking his parents, possibly facing the death penalty due to the circumstances. The decision on seeking the death penalty is pending. Reiner’s pretrial hearing is scheduled for September, with public defender Kimberly Greene representing him.
Apart from the main family trust fund, smaller individual trusts were set up for the Reiner children, with Nick entitled to half of his trust fund at 30 and the remainder at 35. Claiming he never received the funds due at 30, Reiner alleged that trustees were unfairly denying him access to legally entitled money.
High-profile lawyer Alan Jackson initially represented Reiner but left without explanation after a month. Reiner’s siblings, Jake and Romy Reiner, initially agreed to cover legal fees but later changed their decision. Jackson expressed willingness to rejoin if funds were available for his services.
The trust fund cannot be accessed currently due to uncertainties surrounding Reiner’s criminal case and the application of the “slayer statute” principles. Eight months post the incident, many details remain undisclosed, with no speculated motives.
