After unknowingly giving my 18-month-old son, Simon, a cashew, his face swelled, and we rushed to the Winnipeg HSC Children’s Emergency Department. The doctor confirmed he was experiencing an anaphylactic reaction due to a severe cashew and pistachio allergy diagnosis.
The incident left a lasting impact, making me realize the urgent need to protect him from potential allergen exposure. Despite attending classes on managing anaphylactic allergies, my fear grew, leading me to struggle with trusting others to care for Simon.
As Simon grew braver, I sought a solution not for his allergies but for my mental well-being. Over time, I learned to let go of control, allowing him more independence in managing his allergies. I educated him on label reading and EpiPen use, emphasizing the importance of being cautious.
Eventually, Simon wanted to attend a sleepaway camp, prompting me to confront my fears and trust in his ability to navigate his allergies independently. With safety measures in place and support from loved ones, we allowed him to embark on this new adventure, marking a significant step toward embracing his growing independence.
Despite my apprehension, seeing Simon return home from camp with joy and confidence reinforced the importance of letting him explore the world while staying vigilant and seeking support when needed.
