Caitlyn Moony, originally from Johannesburg, relocated to Vancouver in 2018 with high hopes. Despite being enchanted by the city’s beauty initially, she soon faced challenges adjusting to the reality of everyday life in Vancouver. Struggling with job opportunities, high living costs, and a sense of isolation, she found herself resenting the city. The lack of a social network and the elusive concept of “Canadian experience” made her feel helpless and disconnected.
Moony’s discontent grew as she compared Vancouver to her previous homes and longed for a sense of community. Feeling suffocated by loneliness and boredom, exacerbated by the pandemic, she eventually left for London seeking vibrancy and energy. However, her time in London made her realize that Vancouver had quietly shaped her into a more introspective and grounded individual. Despite its imperfections, she now appreciates Vancouver for the space it has given her to grow and discover herself.
Returning to Vancouver with a newfound perspective, Moony acknowledges the city’s flaws but expresses a desire to reconcile and reconnect. Embracing the city’s unique pace and character, she seeks a second chance to build a meaningful relationship with Vancouver.
