Chad Dupuis, a resident of Slave Lake, Alberta, has been employed by Alberta Parks since 2017. In a recent account, he shared his experience of working at Carson Pegasus Provincial Park, where he serves as the maintenance supervisor. On a scorching Sunday, amidst the park’s bustling activities, Dupuis and his team diligently prepared over 120 camping sites for incoming visitors.
Despite the physically demanding tasks of park maintenance, including trash collection, firepit cleaning, and tidying up after weekend campers, Dupuis was in high spirits as the day drew to a close. Looking forward to a barbecue dinner featuring steak, he returned to his Winnebago after a long day’s work.
To his surprise, upon entering his temporary abode, Dupuis discovered the absence of his carefully selected steak, replaced by an empty butcher paper. Speculating on the possible culprit, his initial thoughts turned to a young black bear that had recently wandered near his campsite. However, the lack of a messy scene ruled out the bear as the thief.
Puzzled by the mystery, Dupuis considered the possibility of human intrusion, given past unauthorized entries in the area. Yet, the untouched jar of change on the counter dismissed this theory. His investigation led him to a torn window screen, indicating a small animal’s entry and theft of his anticipated meal.
Reflecting on the incident, Dupuis acknowledged the importance of respecting wildlife in their natural habitat. Despite his familiarity with forest creatures, the incident served as a reminder of their wild and unpredictable nature, urging him to remain vigilant and avoid complacency.
Upon hearing a growl from beneath his bed, Dupuis cautiously confronted the intruder, revealing a pine marten, a weasel family member, as the steak thief. After a brief standoff, the marten retreated into the wilderness, leaving Dupuis amused by the unexpected turn of events.
As he settled for an alternate dinner plan, Dupuis recognized the humorous anecdote the encounter would make for his colleagues, underscoring the unpredictability and charm of wildlife encounters in his line of work.
