Controversy has arisen over the construction of a new lavish White House State Ballroom by Donald Trump, which is expected to span 90,000 square feet and accommodate over 650 individuals in ornately designed surroundings. The project involves demolishing the historic East Wing of the White House, despite previous assurances from Trump that the ballroom would not interfere with the existing structure.
Hillary Clinton, who lost to Trump in the 2016 US presidential election, criticized the extravagant plans, emphasizing that the White House belongs to the people and condemning the destruction of the historic East Wing. Melania Trump, the President’s wife, has reportedly expressed private frustration over the demolition of the East Wing, distancing herself from the project.
The East Wing, originally built in 1902 and known for housing the first lady’s office and staff, has undergone expansions and renovations over the years, including the construction of the bombproof Presidential Emergency Operations Center in 1942. Concerns have been raised about the significant cost escalation of the ballroom project, initially budgeted at $200 million but now projected to reach $300 million.
Critics, including former White House staff members and political figures, have voiced their disapproval of the project, citing the lack of transparency, consultation, and historical accountability in the decision-making process. Despite the backlash, Trump has been utilizing debris from the East Wing demolition to enhance his golf game at the nearby East Potomac Golf Links.
