The UK Foreign Office has issued a travel advisory for British citizens planning trips to Japan. Japan, known for its safety, is currently facing a rise in bear encounters in the mountainous Akita region. These encounters, mostly with brown and Asiatic black bears, have resulted in injuries and fatalities over the past months.
Reports indicate that bear sightings near populated areas, including schools and train stations, have become frequent. The Environment Ministry’s data shows that since April, there have been over 100 injuries and at least 12 deaths from bear attacks in Japan. In response to the situation, the UK Foreign Office has issued a warning to travelers in Japan, advising caution in mountainous and forested regions.
The increasing bear population’s encroachment into residential areas is particularly concerning due to the region’s aging population and lack of skilled hunters. The government estimates the bear population at over 54,000. To address the issue, soldiers have been deployed in collaboration with local authorities to set traps, assist hunters, and manage bear incidents without resorting to lethal measures.
The Defense Ministry’s efforts aim to safeguard daily life in affected areas, emphasizing the need for urgent action in response to the bear problem. The operation, launched in Kazuno city, where bear sightings and damage to crops have been reported, involves soldiers equipped with protective gear and non-lethal bear deterrents.
Authorities, facing challenges in managing the increasing bear-human conflicts, are exploring solutions to control the bear population and minimize risks to residents. The government’s task force is working on strategies to address the ongoing bear situation, including population surveys, enhanced warning systems, and potential revisions to hunting regulations to ensure public safety.
