Recent long-term predictions from the Met Office and BBC Weather indicate that the lead-up to Christmas in the UK will see unsettled weather, including rain and gusty winds in various regions. However, a shift towards calmer and more stable conditions is expected to bring some holiday cheer.
As Christmas Eve and Christmas Day draw near, high pressure is forecasted to develop, reducing the likelihood of widespread rain. Dry periods with lighter winds are anticipated across many areas, although some parts of the far northwest may still experience showers, according to the Met Office.
The BBC concurs, forecasting temperatures around or slightly above seasonal averages. This suggests that significant snowfall is improbable in most low-lying regions, although northern Scotland’s higher terrains might see occasional wintry showers.
Between December 20 and December 29, the Met Office warns of continued rainy spells and windy conditions affecting various parts of the country at times.
However, as Christmas approaches, the tumultuous weather is expected to subside with the likelihood of high pressure dominating near the UK, following a period of unsettled conditions. This shift should decrease the risk of heavy rain and strong winds.
The Met Office also mentions a potential increase in overnight frost and fog, persisting into daytime due to the low winter sun. Temperatures are projected to align closer to seasonal norms, especially in areas where fog lingers, as stated by the national weather agency.
For the period between December 22 and December 28, BBC Weather anticipates more settled weather as high pressure establishes from Scandinavia towards the UK. Despite this, the chance of rain persists, with Atlantic weather systems attempting to encroach.
The western regions of the UK are most likely to experience wetter intervals, although other areas could also encounter rainfall if the high pressure weakens.
The BBC assures that no extreme cold temperatures are anticipated, with temperatures expected to slightly decrease but remain above December averages.
Winter high pressure typically leads to increased chances of frost and fog during nights and mornings, according to BBC forecasters. Snowfall is likely to be limited to higher altitudes in Scotland, making a white Christmas improbable for most areas.
