A luxurious London mansion worth £12 million is one of the properties affected today in a series of sanctions aimed at individuals believed to be orchestrating illegal scam operations. The UK and US jointly imposed sanctions on assets associated with a network of centers in south-east Asia that allegedly defrauded victims of large sums of money.
In the crackdown, assets like a lavish mansion on Avenue Road in North London, owned by a company accused of exploiting forced labor to deceive people, have been frozen. This property boasts 10 bedrooms, a cinema, gym, pool, wine room, and a driveway car lift. Additionally, a £100 million office building in the City of London, situated near the ‘Walkie Talkie’ skyscraper, and 17 flats spread across London, each valued between £950,000 to £1.5 million, have also been impacted.
The Foreign Office stated that the network, known as The Prince Group, involved in operating the scam centers, reportedly subjects trafficked workers to torture and defrauds victims worldwide. The network’s leader, Chen Zhi, and his associates have allegedly established businesses in the British Virgin Islands and invested in the London real estate market. The imposed sanctions are intended to immediately freeze these businesses and properties, preventing Chen and his network from accessing the UK financial system.
Yvette Cooper expressed concern over the impact of these scam centers on vulnerable individuals and highlighted the acquisition of London properties by the perpetrators. The Foreign Secretary emphasized the collaborative effort with US allies to combat the escalating global threat posed by this network, emphasizing the commitment to upholding human rights, safeguarding British citizens, and combating illicit financial activities.
Lord Hanson, the Fraud Minister, condemned the exploitation of vulnerable individuals by fraudsters who deceive and devastate lives through financial scams. The sanctions reflect a resolute stance against those profiting from fraudulent activities, aiming to enforce accountability and deter the flow of illicit funds into the UK. The government plans to further disrupt corrupt networks and protect the public through an enhanced Fraud Strategy and the upcoming Global Fraud Summit.
