Chatting with residents in various communities reveals a common concern about the rising cost of living. This issue has been a personal focus, advocating for more affordable infant formula and assisting families in avoiding predatory lending practices.
Extensive travels last year across the nation enabled me to engage with Iceland’s 30,000 employees and five million customers, culminating in the ‘Iceland Manifesto’ released before the previous year’s election. The manifesto reflected widespread sentiments of feeling unheard by politicians and grappling with the escalating expenses of essentials like childcare, heating, and food.
As I take on the role of a Labour peer, my aim is to bridge the gap between high-street realities and Westminster by representing the voices of businesses and communities nationwide. Drawing from my experience as a retailer and entrepreneur, I seek to contribute significantly, emphasizing the importance of providing employment and access to affordable, quality food.
Understanding the financial obligations of businesses in meeting payroll and the daily challenges faced by families to put nutritious meals on their tables underscores the need for supportive policies. Private enterprise, underpinned by confidence to invest and a conducive regulatory environment, remains vital for sustainable economic growth.
