A tragic incident occurred as a woman lost her life in an unusual accident involving her car’s electric window. Bernadette Delmotte, aged 60, met her untimely demise while trying to prevent her unbraked car from rolling away. Reports from Bissy-sur-Fley, France, revealed that she inadvertently trapped her neck between the electric window and the car body while reaching through the window of her Fiat 500 to access the handbrake.
Initially suspected to be a victim of an attempted car theft, her absence at a gathering on the day of the incident, June 13, raised concerns among her family and friends. However, investigations later confirmed that her tragic death was a result of a horrifying accident involving the car’s window. François, her brother, expressed his initial confusion and denial upon hearing the news, highlighting the unexpected nature of the incident.
According to Béatrice, a close friend, the accident unfolded when the handbrake was not engaged, causing the car to move backward. In an attempt to halt the car’s movement, Bernadette leaned through the window but inadvertently triggered the window control, leading to the fatal outcome.
In a similar incident in 2021 in Ukraine, a woman lost her life in a comparable accident when her neck got trapped in the window of her stationary BMW car. Celebrating her 21st birthday, she was reaching out to her daughter through the partially opened window when the child unknowingly activated the automatic window, resulting in a tragic outcome.
Many modern vehicles incorporate safety features like ‘pinch protection’ to prevent such accidents by detecting resistance during window closure and activating an anti-pinch mechanism automatically.
