“Terrorist Attack Strikes Manchester Synagogue on Yom Kippur”

Date:

As reports emerged of a terrorist attack at a synagogue in Manchester, Jewish community members expressed feeling a sense of danger as they rushed to alert their families. The tragic incident occurred at Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation on Middleton Road early this morning, resulting in two fatalities and four people sustaining serious injuries. The perpetrator was fatally shot by police.

Authorities from Greater Manchester Police later labeled the incident as a terrorist attack, revealing that it involved a car deliberately targeting civilians and a stabbing. The violent act took place on Yom Kippur, a significant day in the Jewish faith calendar when synagogues are typically crowded with worshippers, including those who do not attend regularly. Some devout Jews refrain from using technology during this observance, preventing them from accessing news or contacting loved ones.

Eli Hassell, a local resident near the scene, hurried to notify his father about the distressing event at the synagogue. Despite feeling apprehensive while wearing his kippa (Jewish skull cap) in public, he felt compelled to alert his father of the potential danger.

In a separate incident, Kate Lurie faced disappointment when she found The Shrubberies synagogue sealed off, preventing her from entering on the holiest day of the Jewish calendar. Despite the setback, she emphasized the importance of resilience and defiance in the face of terror, echoing the sentiments of her husband Michael.

Phil Geller, a member of the Shrubberies synagogue, learned about the attack after it occurred due to observing Yom Kippur and refraining from media consumption. Despite the distressing news, he remained determined to attend synagogue services as a show of community solidarity.

Anthony Dennison, who was at a different synagogue during the attack, described the atmosphere as one of devastation and expressed concern about the current climate of fear and uncertainty.

Daniel Berke, a representative of UK Lawyers for Israel, rushed to the synagogue upon hearing of the attack and commended the security guards stationed there for their bravery and dedication to ensuring the safety of worshippers.

As he left the synagogue, Berke praised the security guards for their selfless actions in protecting the community, highlighting the risks they face in safeguarding places of worship.
