Surfer Drives to Hospital After Shark Attack

Date:

A man in his fifties was attacked by a shark while surfing at a popular tourist destination but managed to drive himself to the hospital for emergency surgery. The incident occurred at D’Estrees Bay on Kangaroo Island, South Australia, where the man was bitten twice by the shark believed to be a bronze whaler. The attack took place around 1:37 pm local time on Tuesday.

Bronze whaler sharks are commonly found in coastal and offshore areas of South Australia, reaching lengths of up to 3.3 meters and weighing up to 300 kilograms. Another surfer who survived a great white shark attack in the same area described the encounter as feeling like being hit by a truck.

In a similar incident in 2020, a surfer named Dion Lynch was bitten by a great white shark at D’Estrees Bay. Despite sustaining injuries to his back, buttock, and elbow, Dion managed to paddle to the beach and seek help. Following the attack, he expressed hope for a full recovery and gratitude for surviving the ordeal during a particularly dangerous year for shark attacks.

Recalling the moment of the attack, Dion described feeling a powerful impact on his left side, likening it to being struck by a truck. He witnessed the shark release its grip before swimming away, allowing him to reach the shore with his surfboard. Dion then sought assistance from another surfer who happened to be an off-duty paramedic and drove him to Kingscote Hospital where they were met by paramedics.

Both incidents serve as stark reminders of the risks associated with shark encounters in Australian waters, highlighting the importance of swift action and emergency response in such situations.
