Nearly six months have passed since Microsoft ceased support for Windows 10. Consequently, numerous laptops are now without crucial security updates, making them vulnerable to cyber threats and malware. While some newer laptops can transition to Windows 11 through Microsoft’s update program, older PCs that do not meet the system requirements force users into a challenging position.
These users have several options: continue using unsupported laptops, pay for extended updates (ESUs), or replace their devices with new ones pre-installed with Windows 11. However, an alternative has emerged for older PCs to prolong their usability and prevent them from becoming obsolete. Google has partnered with refurbished electronics retailer Back Market to introduce a USB kit that revitalizes aging laptops using ChromeOS Flex software.
ChromeOS Flex is a lightweight operating system compatible with many older computers, effectively converting them into Chromebook-style devices. Once installed, users access services like Chrome, Gmail, Docs, and the Android app store, all without the expense of purchasing a new laptop.
Although ChromeOS Flex has been available as a free download from Google, the new USB kits simplify the installation process. Users can even test the system from the USB drive before committing to a full installation. The USB kits have gained popularity, with high demand causing them to be currently out of stock.
In a blog post, Google stated, “Last October marked a turning point for hundreds of millions of computers. Microsoft Windows 10 reached its end of support, leaving many with a tough choice: invest in a new device or continue using an insecure, outdated one.” To provide an alternative, Google partnered with Back Market to offer the ChromeOS Flex USB Kit, enabling users to modernize their existing PCs or Macs with a fast, secure, and free operating system.
Priced at around £3, the kit includes a USB stick that can be reused, contributing to reducing electronic waste. Despite the affordable cost, demand is high, as the item is currently listed as out of stock on Back Market’s website.
Beyond extending the life of old laptops, Google highlights the environmental benefits of ChromeOS Flex. By utilizing already-manufactured devices for longer periods, the software helps reduce e-waste and mitigates the carbon footprint associated with producing new laptops. Additionally, ChromeOS is touted to consume 19% less energy on average compared to similar systems.
For those considering a switch, ChromeOS Flex is a viable option. Make sure to keep an eye out for restocks if you’re interested in upgrading your older devices.
