Serving Metropolitan Police officers have been captured in secret recordings advocating for the shooting of illegal immigrants suspected of crimes and making inappropriate jokes about rape, according to recent revelations. The recordings also exposed instances of crude sexual comments, racist remarks about immigrants and Muslims, and dismissive attitudes towards serious allegations like rape and domestic violence.
The undercover investigation conducted by Panorama shed light on disturbing conversations within the police force, including one officer suggesting a detainee should be shot and making derogatory remarks about women. The recordings also captured officers displaying discriminatory behavior towards immigrants and discussing inappropriate topics like sexual activities in a custody setting.
The shocking behavior outlined in the recordings prompted Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley to denounce the officers’ actions as “disgraceful” and “totally unacceptable.” Following the scandal, nine officers have been suspended and are currently under investigation by the police watchdog. The commissioner emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards racism, misogyny, and excessive use of force within the police force.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan expressed support for the commissioner’s efforts to address misconduct within the Met Police and emphasized the need for swift action to remove officers who abuse their positions of trust. The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) is conducting its own inquiry into the allegations of gross misconduct, with several officers facing potential disciplinary actions.
The scandal has raised concerns about public trust in the police force, prompting immediate changes within the Charing Cross police station and across the Metropolitan Police to address the issues exposed by the investigation. Efforts are underway to root out wrongdoing and ensure a culture of accountability and respect within the police force.
