“Alan Titchmarsh Shares Bulb Planting Tips for Spring”

Date:

Renowned gardening expert and beloved TV personality Alan Titchmarsh has shared his expert tips on planting bulbs this September. Titchmarsh highlighted the best bulb varieties to plant now for vibrant spring displays from February to May next year.

In a recent video on his YouTube channel, “Gardening with Alan Titchmarsh,” the presenter demonstrated the planting process for popular bulb types including daffodils, tulips, and crocuses. He emphasized the significance of selecting high-quality bulbs that feel plump and firm to ensure a profusion of blooms in the spring.

For those with limited garden space, Titchmarsh recommended the straightforward method of planting bulbs in containers and pots. He explained the initial steps of adding drainage materials to prevent oversaturation and then layering the growing medium before planting the bulbs in a specific sequence known as “lasagne” planting.

In the video, Titchmarsh showcased his layering technique, starting with tulip bulbs, followed by daffodils and narcissi, and finally crocuses. He explained the rationale behind this sequence, ensuring a continuous flowering display in the container. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of planting bulbs at the forefront of beds and borders for a striking burst of color in the spring.

To plant bulbs in borders, Titchmarsh advised digging holes three times as deep as the bulbs, placing them with shoots facing upwards and spacing them adequately for growth. He also discussed the concept of “naturalising” bulbs in grass, recommending clumping daffodils and planting tulips singularly for a wildflower meadow effect.

In his lawn, Titchmarsh demonstrated using a bulb planter to space tulip bulbs apart and cover them with grass plugs. Overall, his expert guidance emphasized the importance of proper bulb planting techniques to achieve a vibrant and colorful spring garden.
