Rybakina, the Kazakhstani tennis star, emerged victorious in a straight-sets match against world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka, securing a £4 million prize, marking her most notable win since the 2022 Wimbledon tournament.
The decision not to pose with Archer during the traditional champion’s photograph session was believed to be a statement against the suspension of her coach, Stefano Vukov, for breaching the WTA’s code of conduct. Vukov, who had previously guided Rybakina to success at Wimbledon, had faced scrutiny over his behavior towards the player. Despite the suspension, Vukov successfully appealed the ban in August and resumed his coaching responsibilities.
Rybakina expressed her satisfaction at having Vukov back as her coach, denying any past issues or mistreatment by him. However, her snub towards Archer, responsible for overseeing conduct investigations, drew criticism from Shriver on social media. Shriver lamented Rybakina’s decision to work with Vukov again and urged the tennis community to address instances of abuse and manipulation.
During her winners’ press conference, Rybakina remained silent on her refusal to stand with Archer but criticized the WTA for inadequate communication regarding the Vukov matter. She emphasized the tough battle she faced to achieve her remarkable victory and refrained from elaborating further on the controversy.
Sabalenka, who had a stellar season with notable achievements at the Grand Slam tournaments, including a victory at the US Open, expressed disappointment at falling short in the Finals. She acknowledged Rybakina’s superior performance and vowed to continue improving despite the defeat.
