Donald Trump’s golf ventures in Scotland faced financial losses last year despite achieving record sales. Financial reports submitted for the President’s resorts at the Menie Estate in Aberdeenshire and Turnberry in Ayrshire revealed that Turnberry’s turnover surged by 15% in 2024 to a remarkable £23.2 million, following its acquisition for £29.5 million in June 2014. The boost was primarily attributed to affluent tourists frequenting the location for high-priced golf rounds exceeding £1,000.
SLC Turnberry, the operating entity of the resort, announced an operating profit of £2.3 million for the year ending on December 31, 2024. However, after factoring in depreciation charges, it reported an overall loss of £631,779. On the other hand, the Trump International Golf Links in northeast Scotland, established in 2012 amidst environmental controversies, experienced its 13th consecutive year of financial losses, totaling £937,693 for the year, an improvement from the prior year’s loss of £1.4 million.
During a visit to Scotland in July, Trump inaugurated a second course at the site, reiterating his praise for the facility as one of the best globally and promising job creation. Despite expectations, the business only supported 108 jobs during its 13th year, with total wages amounting to £2.65 million. Following his election in 2016, the 79-year-old Republican President resigned as director of the golf business, transferring control to his family.
In the director’s reports for Menie Estate, Eric Trump, the White House chief’s son, expressed optimism about the resort’s future and the ongoing development of luxury accommodation to enhance its appeal. Similarly, for Turnberry, Eric Trump highlighted the strong financial performance driven by high demand from groups and leisure travelers, emphasizing the premium pricing of its championship courses. The Trump Organization employed 446 individuals at Turnberry during the year, with total wages reaching £10.3 million.
Sarah Malone, Executive Vice President at Trump International Scotland, lauded the revenue growth and record turnovers achieved by Turnberry and Trump International in 2024, attributing the success to significant capital investments in improving the golf courses and leisure amenities. Trump, known for his passion for golf, has spent a substantial amount of time on the green during his current presidency, reflecting his deep interest in the sport.
Overall, despite the financial challenges faced by some of Trump’s golf properties in Scotland, efforts are ongoing to enhance and expand the facilities to attract more visitors and bolster long-term success.
