“Lottery Fraudster’s Trail of Deception Unveiled”

Date:

Twisted individual Edward Putman has a history of exploiting those closest to him throughout his life. Since being convicted of rape in 1991, he has engaged in a series of disturbing acts, including allegations of domestic violence, benefit fraud, and violence, culminating in his elaborate scheme – the 2009 National Lottery fraud.

The fraudulent scheme was built on an unlikely friendship between Putman and Camelot employee Giles Knibbs. Utilizing a counterfeit ticket, Putman falsely claimed a £2.5 million prize and proceeded to enjoy a luxurious lifestyle, splurging on BMWs and extravagant vacations. His deception remained undetected for seven years until 2016 when the Gambling Commission penalized Camelot with a £3 million fine for inadequate controls that allowed a tampered ticket to win.

Investigations into council records and land registry documents unveiled how Putman spent £466,000 in cash on his partner’s property post-lottery win, transforming it into a collection point for decaying vehicles. Following his imprisonment, and as the abandoned house suffered arson, it was later disclosed that Putman was released early due to crisis management strategies to alleviate prison overcrowding.

Subsequently, Putman settled a Proceeds of Crime Act court order, leaving unanswered questions about the whereabouts of over £1 million acquired from the scam. Nevertheless, the profound impact of Putman’s criminal lifestyle on those in his circle remains undeniable.
