Jodie Whittaker has revealed that portraying the character of Doctor Who resonated with her more than any other role she has taken on. The 43-year-old actress made history as the first woman to play the iconic Time Lord in the BBC’s popular sci-fi series before starring in Time and the Netflix hit Toxic Town. She is set to appear in the upcoming ITV drama Frauds.
In the new show, Jodie stars alongside former Coronation Street actress Suranne Jones as a duo of female fraudsters named Bert and Sam, who reunite to pull off a major heist. Despite her diverse roles, Jodie confessed that she felt a special connection to the enigmatic Doctor, a character who traverses time and space.
Reflecting on her varied television roles, Jodie acknowledged the deliberate choices she makes in selecting projects while expressing gratitude for being considered for unique characters like Sam. She emphasized the contrast between herself and her on-screen persona, particularly noting the differences in appearance and personality from her co-star Suranne.
Having succeeded Peter Capaldi as the Doctor and later being replaced by Ncuti Gatwa, Jodie emphasized her close affinity to the character she portrayed on Doctor Who, attributing her casting to her natural personality traits observed by showrunner Chris Chibnall.
