Four individuals lost their lives and twelve others sustained injuries during a shooting incident that occurred in Mississippi early on Saturday morning, as confirmed by local authorities.
The shooting took place on a primary street in the town of Leland, as stated by Mayor John Lee, who noted that the town was unusually bustling due to Leland High School’s homecoming game against Charleston High School.
Reports indicate that the perpetrator responsible for the shooting is still at large. Mayor Lee expressed his deep sorrow over the tragic event in a post on Facebook, announcing the cancellation of a planned block party for public safety.
Mayor Lee informed CBS News that four of the injured victims were flown by air ambulance to nearby hospitals, with their current medical conditions remaining undisclosed. Law enforcement authorities have not made any arrests in connection with the incident, and investigations are ongoing.
Furthermore, there were reports of a separate shooting incident in Heidelberg, another town in Mississippi, on Friday night. Heidelberg Police Chief Cornell White disclosed that two individuals were fatally shot on the high school premises, with at least one additional person sustaining injuries, as reported by WDAM.
Mayor Robert Barnett of Heidelberg pledged full cooperation with the school district and sheriff’s department to apprehend the individual responsible for the incident. He emphasized the town’s commitment to upholding the law and ensuring the safety of its residents and surrounding communities.
Barnett reassured the public that Heidelberg is typically a safe place and that the shooting was an unforeseen occurrence. He highlighted that Heidelberg and Leland are located three hours apart geographically.
