As winter grips the UK with its first snow and ice, The AA issues a strong advisory on safely de-icing vehicles. Yellow and amber weather alerts blanket the nation as temperatures plunge into sub-zero territory, hitting -6.1°C in Cumbria, -5.8°C in Wales, and -4.8°C in parts of Scotland.
The chilly conditions greet drivers with icy windshields, prompting a rush to clear them before commutes. However, caution is urged as some de-icing methods can do more harm than good. The use of water, often a quick fix, can pose risks, with hot water known to potentially damage the glass.
The AA recommends avoiding even lukewarm water, explaining that the rapid temperature changes can lead to glass cracking, especially if there are existing chips or cracks. Moreover, using water in freezing temperatures can worsen the situation by creating additional ice and potentially freezing wipers to the glass, risking damage to wiper motors and blades.
The organization advises against using cold water as well, as it can freeze on the windscreen, causing further issues. Instead, they offer guidance on a safe and efficient de-icing process. This entails ensuring wipers are off, starting the engine with warm air directed at the windscreen, activating rear window heaters and mirrors, and using air conditioning to prevent misting.
Remaining inside the vehicle while the windscreen thaws, drivers are then advised to clear snow with a soft brush, ensuring all lights and windows are free of obstruction. A scraper and de-icer should be used on all windows before setting off. The AA stresses the importance of waiting until all windows are completely clear before driving, emphasizing the use of car heaters and de-icer to expedite the process.
