The use of unofficially modified Fire TV Sticks for accessing premium content like Sky Sports and movies has become widespread in UK households. These altered devices, easily found online, offer a range of entertainment options for a nominal yearly fee, including free access to shows and boxsets.
As more consumers turn away from official providers, companies like Sky are increasingly concerned about the proliferation of these adapted Fire TV Sticks. Sky’s chief operating officer, Nick Herm, noted the prevalence of jailbroken Fire Sticks in social circles and among football enthusiasts who proudly display their support for these devices.
While Amazon bears no responsibility for the unauthorized use of its Fire TV Sticks, the company exclusively pre-installs legitimate apps such as Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video. The challenge arises from the capability to sideload unofficial applications, enabling the installation of free streaming software.
In response to these issues, Amazon has introduced a new Fire TV Stick model, the 4K Select, which offers affordable pricing and enhanced 4K visuals. The device has transitioned from Amazon’s Fire OS to the Vega operating system. Notably, the new software restricts app installations to only approved software available through Amazon’s marketplace, potentially deterring the use of unofficial applications and curbing illegal streaming activities.
Amazon has emphasized the security enhancements by confirming that only apps from the Amazon Appstore on Fire TV can be downloaded. While existing Fire TV Sticks with unauthorized apps will remain unaffected, the introduction of the 4K Select model signals a shift towards greater control over app installations, hinting at a possible future crackdown on illicit streaming on these devices.
