Joan Higginbotham, a seasoned astronaut with a background in electrical engineering and space missions, utilizes a meticulous approach to packing for her travels, ensuring she never forgets any essentials. Known for her analytical mindset, Joan, who is one of the few African American women to have ventured into space, meticulously plans her packing process by creating detailed checklists and utilizing spreadsheets.
Having experienced the tragic loss of seven colleagues in the 2003 Space Shuttle Columbia accident, Joan waited a decade before embarking on her own space mission. In 2006, she was part of the STS-116 mission aboard Space Shuttle Discovery, spending 12 days in space assisting in the assembly and enhancement of the International Space Station.
Beginning her career in 1987 at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center as a Payload Electrical Engineer, Joan played a crucial role in preparing and launching numerous Space Shuttle missions. Currently, she serves as an ambassador at the Florida Space Center, engaging with young space enthusiasts to inspire interest in STEM fields.
During a recent visit to London, Joan highlighted the attractions at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, including the popular Shuttle launch simulator and virtual reality experiences. The Center, recognized as a top tourist destination, offers visitors the opportunity to interact with retired astronauts like Joan and explore various space-themed exhibits and activities.
A recent addition to the Center is the revamped Kennedy Space Center Bus Tour, featuring new stops and interactive displays like the Rocket Build Interactive and Earth Information Center. Additionally, guests can now enjoy a space-themed drone show during the festive season at the Center.
For space enthusiasts, the Kennedy Space Center offers the chance to witness live rocket launches, complete with expert commentary, although weather and technical factors can impact the schedule. Anticipating a record number of launches in 2025, the Center provides an exciting and educational experience for visitors of all ages.
