OVO has announced a winter support program worth £56 million, offering complimentary energy-saving items to help consumers during the colder months. The initiative includes free electric blankets, smart sockets, and home efficiency kits. Additionally, OVO is providing support such as free energy upgrades, including loft insulation, new boilers, or heat pumps.
Furthermore, the company is extending financial assistance to those facing difficulties, offering benefits like reduced direct debits, emergency credit top-ups, and extended repayment options. Although the support is available year-round, applications for enhanced winter aid will open in October. OVO has already allocated £190 million in support since 2022, aiding 42,000 customers last year.
David Buttress, OVO’s CEO, emphasized the importance of collaboration with charity partners to deliver this substantial customer support package. He highlighted the necessity for a more inclusive energy system, advocating for targeted assistance like a social tariff to prevent anyone from being left behind.
Warm Welcome Campaign Director, David Barclay, expressed the campaign’s commitment to providing accessible and safe support spaces in collaboration with OVO. Through this partnership, they aim to offer practical assistance to individuals during the challenging winter months.
Vikki Brownridge, CEO of StepChange debt charity, welcomed the ongoing partnership with OVO, acknowledging the critical support it provides to customers struggling with energy bills, especially in the upcoming colder seasons. The Extra Support program will offer guidance and aid to individuals dealing with energy arrears and broader financial challenges.
As energy costs are expected to rise this winter, with the Ofgem price cap increasing from £1,720 to £1,755 annually on October 1, concerns about bills are mounting. Recent polling by OVO revealed that 91% of respondents are anxious about winter bills, with 71% expressing even greater apprehension compared to last year.
