Netflix will no longer be accessible on certain older Fire TV devices starting June 3, as confirmed by Amazon. The affected devices include the Amazon Fire TV Stick (2014), Amazon Fire TV Stick with Alexa voice remote (2014), and Amazon Fire TV (2014).
This change is due to Netflix discontinuing support for these first-generation Fire TV devices, which were released over a decade ago. The reason behind this decision seems to be related to the AV1 codec technology, which enables higher quality resolution for streaming, but is not compatible with the older Fire TV Sticks.
To determine if your Fire TV device is affected, go to Settings > My Fire TV > About on your Fire TV. If your device is on the list below, Netflix will cease to function on it:
– Amazon Fire TV Stick (2014)
– Amazon Fire TV Stick with Alexa voice remote (2014)
– Amazon Fire TV (2014)
Amazon also reassured that Netflix will continue to be available on all other Fire TV devices. For those looking to upgrade, newer Fire Sticks with enhanced features, such as 4K models and the Max version offering the Ambient Experience, are now available. These new models provide a dynamic viewing experience with customizable widgets and sticky notes on your TV screen.
