Luminar AI Receives Update With Compatability For Apple M1 Macs

Today sees the release of the latest update to LuminarAI, striking image-editing software that I originally reviewed back in January. The AI-guided photo editing package has been developed by Skylum and this latest update offers some important enhancements as well as compatibility with Apple’s M1 silicon.

One of the great effects that LuminarAI can create is striking skies that can be altered to enhance travel, landscape and outdoor portraits. With some new algorithms, the software can now produce even more photorealistic results while offering greater control and accuracy over the appearance of skies.

Thanks to better sky detection, the update now has improved horizon detection so that a sky can more accurately be placed in a scene. Refined edge detection and masking are used to make the skies look more realistic. Thanks to the improved sky effect, LuminarAI is now able to create more realistic reflections in the water. To make the reflections look more natural, there are special sliders that can be used to control Haze, Warmth, Brightness and Water Blur, giving greater control over the reflections’ appearance.

The update offers improvements in color accuracy so that photographers can produce a more natural-looking effect when a replacement sky is used. The entire screen can be automatically relit, including the reflections. There are three relighting controls available for dialing in lighting conditions to get just the kind of effect the photographer wants to create.

Now that Apple has started to roll out Macs with the company’s new M1 silicon, Skylum has chosen to update LuminarAI so that it fully supports Apple M1 chips. With the native M1 support in a universal binary, macOS users will be able to take full advantage of the faster processing offered in Apple’s M1 chips. That’s a very important update as LuminarAI does need a powerful processor and plenty of fast RAM.

A Dodge & Burn Tool has been introduced so that users can paint highlights and shadows into a photo to enhance the mood of the shot. With a new Softness slider, edges can be subtly refined to create a more natural effect. Finally, support for Apple’s HEIC image format has been added. This enables Windows users to open and edit photos taken with iPhones and other iOS devices.

This latest version of LuminarAI will be of interest to anyone who wants to produce striking photos with enhanced and dramatic skies that can give images a fantasy effect that makes a photo pop. The effects might be a little dramatic and over-the-top for some people’s tastes, but if you want to create photos that refuse to be ignored, LuminarAI is a great way to do it.

Pricing and Availability: LuminarAI Update 3 is a free update for current LuminarAI users. New users can get LuminarAI for £79 / $79 / €79. A license can that be used on two machines costs £99 / $99 / €99.
