Jack Willis received the prestigious Top 14 Player of the Year award on Monday for his outstanding performances with Toulouse, the French champions. Since moving to France in 2022, the English flanker has consistently impressed, winning three consecutive Top 14 titles with Toulouse after leaving his childhood club, Wasps.
Initially joining Toulouse on a short-term deal, Willis later committed his future to the club, foregoing the opportunity to play for England due to their policy against selecting overseas-based players. Despite being at the peak of his career at 28, Willis has only earned 14 caps for England.
Outshining his teammates Thomas Ramos and Sireli Maqala, Willis was recognized as the best player in the highly regarded Top 14 league, a title previously held by Antoine Dupont. Speaking at the awards ceremony in Paris, Willis humbly acknowledged his teammates’ contributions, expressing gratitude for the opportunity Toulouse provided him.
Reflecting on his journey, Willis expressed his gratitude for the chance Toulouse gave him, leading to his current success in France. Alongside his Top 14 achievements, Willis has also secured the European Cup with Toulouse. His contract with the club extends until 2029, with a provision allowing his return to England in 2027, coinciding with the Rugby World Cup.
While England’s strict policy has limited their selection options, head coach Steve Borthwick defended the decision, emphasizing the need to build a strong domestic system to retain top talent. Borthwick stressed the importance of creating an environment where players are incentivized to stay in England by ensuring a competitive and attractive rugby landscape.
