The first Elden Ring gameplay trailer is here and it is everything we hoped for and more. The game, of course, looks very much like Dark Souls and even has the iconic bonfires of that game. I’m not sure if it’s set in the same universe, but it certainly looks to be in ways that both Bloodborne and especially Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice do not.
The trailer shows off mounts—impressively agile horses that can run up cliffsides—as well as a number of terrifying foes and armored heroes.
Here’s the dialogue that plays out over the trailer. A woman—likely whoever you speak with at the game’s “hub” area (think Firelink Shrine or Majula)—speaks words of encouragement, while an old man—likely one of the game’s chief antagonists—mocks and commands.
Woman’s voice: “The Tarnished will soon return. Guided by grace once lost. The Golden Order is broken to its core.”
Old man’s voice: “Foul Tarnished, in search of the Elden Ring. Emboldened by the Flame of Ambition. Someone must extinguish thy flame.”
Woman’s voice: “They will fight and they will die in an unending curse. For how else is a Champion or a Lord to be born?”
Old man’s voice: “Well a lowly Tarnished playing as a Lord? I command thee kneel!”
Woman’s voice: “Brandish the Elden Ring for all of us.”
MORE FOR YOU
It’s helpful to watch the original trailer again and transcribe the narration from that as well. Here’s that dialogue:
Man’s voice: “I doubt you could even imagine it. That which commanded the stars, giving life its fullest brilliance. The Elden Ring. Oh Elden Ring. Shattered by someone or something. Don’t tell me you don’t see it. Look up at the sky. It burns.”
I’m not sure but I don’t think it’s the same man’s voice from the new trailer, but I could be wrong. What do you think?
The Elden Ring appears to be some sort of enormously powerful artifact that brought life and light to the world and was later shattered by some malevolent force. Now, the “Tarnished” (this game’s version of Hollows or Ashen) have set out to find it and use it so the world might be mended. You can see the same themes and aesthetic course through the game as those of Dark Souls, making me really start to think of this as Dark Souls 4 but with a different name rather than a Souls-adjacent title like Bloodborne or Sekiro (though Bloodborne is kind of a sequel to Demon’s Souls in some interesting ways).
We’ll know more soon, and maybe even get another glimpse at the game on June 15th when Bandai Namco is set to show off more titles.
Elden Ring comes to PC and consoles on January 21st, 2022—the perfect release date, thank you Lords of Ash and Flame, since it’s after the super busy holiday season and likely will have some room to breathe and dominate January. That also means I can forsake all other responsibilities—games, family, self-care etc.—in order to play this nonstop, with only sleep and nourishment to distract me from time to time.
I am ready. Are you?
