In the midst of the buzz surrounding a recent provocative artwork by Banksy at the Royal Courts of Justice, memories of one of their most controversial projects come flooding back – Dismaland, an entire exhibit that captivated audiences a decade ago.
Back in the summer of 2015, crowds flocked to Dismaland, a Banksy exhibition presented as a satirical amusement park in Weston-super-Mare. The unconventional tourist attraction, set in the abandoned Tropicana lido, delved into themes like climate change, consumerism, war, surveillance, and the refugee crisis, resonating deeply even today. Adding to the eerie ambiance were the deliberately glum and antagonistic staff, hired to enhance the dismal experience for visitors.
Upon entry, guests were met with deliberately unpleasant treatment from the staff, who played their roles with disdain and even incited some guests. The initial encounter featured fake security guards conducting mock searches on attendees and handing out balloons with the label ‘I am an imbecile.’
Reflecting on the project, one employee, Kurtis Young, shared his experience, noting the secretive nature of the job advertisement that drew him in out of curiosity and a sense of adventure. The unconventional and thought-provoking art installations at Dismaland were designed to shock and stimulate dialogue, much like all of Banksy’s works, with pieces like a twisted version of Cinderella’s story attracting attention.
Local residents and visitors, like former art student Ms. Goodhind, found themselves emotionally engaged with the interactive art, feeling a sense of involvement and impact that traditional art often lacks. While there are no current plans for a Dismaland revival, the project’s success not only shed light on the potential of the Tropicana venue for future events but also significantly boosted the local economy by an estimated £20 million, drawing hordes of tourists eager to experience Banksy’s unique take on socio-political issues.
