An expert has suggested a practical method for households in the UK to avoid drainage issues during autumn. While the beauty of falling leaves is a common sight, it can pose a threat to drainage systems by causing blockages. This blockage can lead to potential flooding, water seepage, damage to walls, fascia boards, and floorboards.
The Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors estimates that resolving damp problems can cost homeowners an average of £6,000. Glen Peskett, a specialist at Saxton Blades, warns that homeowners often overlook minor issues like leaves on the roof, not realizing they could result in serious leaks if left unattended.
To prevent these problems, Glen recommends conducting a pre-autumn inspection of your property’s exterior to spot and address small issues before they escalate. One cost-effective solution he proposes is creating a gutter guard using plastic mesh and cable ties from a DIY store.
By cutting the mesh to fit the gutter length, placing it over the guttering, and securing it with cable ties, leaves can be prevented from entering the gutter while allowing water to flow freely. Additionally, trimming tree limbs overhanging gutters and securing fences and sheds are vital steps to prepare for the autumn weather.
Taking these preventive measures can save homeowners from costly repairs and ensure a well-maintained property during the autumn season.
