“Disruptive Jet2 Passengers Divert Flight, Face Consequences”

Date:

A disruptive passenger on a flight to Turkey caused the plane to divert to Germany due to her aggressive behavior and assault on another traveler. Courtney Maich, 27, and her partner Alannah O’Neill, 28, from Dundee, were removed from the Jet2 service after causing disturbances despite warnings from the cabin crew.

The incident led to the flight being rerouted to Cologne, resulting in a three-hour delay for passengers before continuing to Turkey. Jet2 incurred expenses of £27,370.53 for accommodation and the delayed return flight to Edinburgh. The airline is pursuing a civil action against Maich and O’Neill to recover the costs.

During the ordeal, Maich spat on a fellow passenger, prompting German police to intervene. The disruptive behavior of the couple led to their sentencing at Edinburgh Sheriff Court, where they received a 12-month supervision order, community service, and curfew restrictions.

The court highlighted the impact of their actions on other passengers and emphasized the need to prevent such incidents in the future. Maich admitted to various offenses, including aggressive behavior and assault, while both she and O’Neill pleaded guilty to disobeying the pilot’s commands and causing a disturbance on the flight.

This incident comes amidst a rise in crime and disorder at Scotland’s airports, with a 41% increase in reported incidents over the past three years. Edinburgh and Glasgow airports saw a notable uptick in police investigations related to disruptive behavior, indicating a concerning trend in airport security.
