Germany has accused Russia of actively monitoring its satellites in space. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated in a press conference today that both China and Russia are significantly enhancing their space warfare capabilities. Pistorius revealed that two Russian satellites are tailing German military assets in space, specifically tracking an Intelsat satellite utilized by the German armed forces and several other nations such as the UK, Australia, and the US. He urged global leaders to initiate discussions on a space deterrent strategy to counter the recent aggressive actions by China and Russia.
This development coincides with NATO’s potential response to increased Russian intrusions following numerous drone and cyber incidents believed to be linked to the Kremlin. Denmark recently reached out to NATO concerning a drone attack at one of its airports. Flights to Denmark’s Aalborg Airport were diverted after the facility, which also serves the military, closed due to drone activity in its airspace. Authorities confirmed the presence of drones with illuminated lights and are investigating the situation.
Although Denmark contacted NATO regarding the airspace violation, it has not confirmed whether it triggered Article 4, which allows a member state to report a perceived threat to its territorial sovereignty. Article 4 should not be confused with Article 5, which pertains to collective defense, stating an attack on one member is an attack on all. Estonia invoked Article 4 last Friday when three Russian fighter jets breached its airspace.
Western leaders have issued strong statements recently, cautioning Russia that NATO is prepared to respond if violations of allied member states’ airspace persist. Following the breach of Estonian airspace by three armed Russian MiG-31 fighter jets, NATO Chief Mark Rutte emphasized the evaluation of each situation before considering any military response, stating that necessary actions would be taken as required.
UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper echoed a resolute stance, asserting that Britain is prepared to take action against Russian provocations. Additionally, Donald Trump suggested a direct approach of shooting down Russian aircraft as a response to these incidents.
